If we are to take Daniel Webster a little further, we should all be wearing a patriotic costume everyday of the year. Or at least, every holiday like Halloween and Fourth of July when costumes are almost de rigueur and expressions of patriotism are a must, respectively. Just to take you back to your history classes, Daniel Webster is the American patriot who said, to paraphrase, “I was born, will live and shall die as an American”. Well, why not dress like an American?

- Brunswick – This was an informal gown that also doubled as a traveling gown. It had long sleeves, high neck, a petticoat, a hood, and a sack back. Yes, not flattering in any way but it served its purpose. You can wear a cap with it, which protected the hair against the elements as well as the dust and dirt, thus, doing away with so many shampooing in a week.
- Cape – yet another protective piece of clothing, the cape was an outer garment that covered the shoulders. Depending on the season, it can be made of wool, silk and cotton.
- Gown – This consisted of a skirt and bodice sewn together with an exposed petticoat.

One of the darkest moments in American history also serves as an inspiration for patriotic American costumes – the Civil War. Said costumes are usually of the uniforms used by the soldiers of the Union and Confederate armies, complete with buttons and long tailcoats.

Both sides used buttons and other insignia to signify the rank of the person. The main difference was in the color – dark blue for the Union soldiers and gray for the Confederate soldiers. Thus, when choosing from among Civil War costumes, keep this color distinction in mind lest you find yourself wearing Union uniform in the really Deep South.
What better way to be patriotic in dress than to wear the American flag? And so was the Uncle Sam costume born. Uncle Sam, of course, is the national personification of all things American including its government but aside from hamburgers and French fries.
When used as inspiration for a patriotic costume, you must be dressed in the design elements of the American flag. Thus, white stars on red and white stripes set against a blue background is the standard. Now, add in a bow tie and a top hat and you are ready to conquer the party for the Fourth of July.
And who can forget the Statue of Liberty? For many immigrants, it is the symbol of freedom, of a new life and of the American Dream. Given as a gift by the French people, it has the official name of Liberty Enlightening the World.
Basically, to dress up like Lady Liberty, you have to be attired in a light green stola with sandals on your feet, spiked crown on your head, torch and tablet in your hands.
